Post -Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS)

"By age 45, 1 out of every 2.5 women in the United States has had at least one abortion!*

Who are these women? They are single women, married women and divorced women. They are your sisters, your cousins, your aunts, your mothers, your neighbors, your co-workers, your schoolmates, they are women you see every day when you go out into the world. These women come from all different age groups, races, socio-economic levels and religions. So with all these women undergoing this common medical procedure, why isn't there more support for women after an abortion, to discuss their experience? Why so few support groups to talk about your physical and emotional issues afterwards? The fear of political or religious backlash, and the fear of negative reactions from friends or family keeps most women from discussing anything they feel after their abortion. This website provides a neutral, non-political, non-religion based, non-judgmental place for women to communicate with each other after an abortion.

How you feel after an abortion should not be a 'political' or 'religious' issue - if you have a need for support, or emotional or physical problems, they should be treated just like the issues with any other medical procedure."

*This is an excerpt from the website After Abortion.

The site was created by a woman who dealt with her own abortion and wanted to reach out to others and help them through the recovery process, too. It's an excellent site and  has lots of information and offers support through message boards and chat rooms.

What is Post-Abortion Stress Syndrome?

For most individuals, abortion is a closely held secret. Rarely do we talk about this subject with family or friends.  Many women remain silent  because of feelings such as: fear of judgment, guilt, shame and grief. The bondage of shame keeps women silent.

Post-Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS) is a form of post-traumatic stress disorder and can affect more than just the woman. It can affect the fathers of these children, grandparents, aunts, uncles and even friends who felt responsible for supporting the abortion or perhaps grieving the loss of the child.  It could be that you are not post-abortive but are trying to help your spouse or a friend. Maybe you are working to help someone who is considering an abortion.

How do you know you need post-abortion healing?

Perhaps you are thinking, "Okay, so I had an abortion. But that is in the past. Do I really need to be healed?" Some women seemingly never need to work through any kind of healing process. For many of us, the memory of abortion lies like a hidden infection within, weakening and impairing us in ways we may have never realized were related.  Is that true for you? See if you recognize yourself in some of the following :

Disappointment with your life      Depression       Helplessness

Grief        Distrust               Anger/Rage         Guilt          Shame

Hopelessness         Low self-worth         Regret/Sorrow

Fear of God's punishment          Feeling far away from God

Fear of  infertility                 Never feeling forgiven for the abortion

Anxiety       Panic Attacks       Insomnia         Nightmares

Unable to enjoy intimacy        Difficulty in relationships

Longing for the baby lost    Substance abuse     Eating disorders.

Women who experience one or more of the symptoms of post-abortion stress can find the freedom they need by facing their abortion decision and accepting the love, mercy, grace and healing that God freely provides.
